Course description
Grammar and reading comprehension (inclusive vocabulary) at the upper-secondary level.
Advancement in relation to the degree requirements
The course credits can be a part of a degree, but not as a part of English as a major subject.
Entry requirements
Basic eligibility for university studies: Civics A and English A. Applicants are exempted from the Civics A requirement.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
After finishing the course, the student can:
• understand, summarize, and/or interpret meaning of academic texts in English.
• recognise and classify English grammatic catagories, such as parts of speech, sentence elements, sentence structure, and sentence combination.
Skills and ability
After finishing the course, the student can:
• demonstrate and respond to knowledge and understanding when reading and writing in English.
• apply knowledge of English Grammar when writing.
Critical skills and approach
After finishing the course, the student can:
• breakdown and analyse sentences, identifying the constituent parts and functions of English grammar.
• develop a critical approach to academic writing and thus formulate consise English sentences.
• can transfer their English language and communications skills to all other areas of university course work.
Assessments
The forms of examination in the course are:
• written in-class examination, 3 credits
• written assignment, 3 credits
• Oral participation in class diskussions and activitits, 1,5 credits
which together will constitute the course grade.
Course content
The aim of the course is to develop the vocabulary, reading comprehension, and grammatical skills needed to succeed in using English at the university.
Learning activities
A combination of resources are available, including lectures, seminars, and self-study of course literature.

Course evaluation
The course is concluded with an individual course evaluation focusing on the goals of the course. A summary of the evaluation results is made available to the students on the university network/learning platform and is discussed in programme councils or similar forums connected to the course.
