Visual Communication introduces a new way to look at photographic images and graphic design and how the two interact. Through a series of lectures and exercises, the students are asked to open up the field of photography in terms of historical practices and postmodern theory. The close relation between photography and graphic design, and how one is dependent on the other is explored during the course.

Admission requirements

1. At least 30 credits.
2. The equivalent of English B in Swedish secondary school.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should be able to:
-describe the history of photography
-understand the diversity of visual communication
-describe the practices and considerations of the graphic designer

After the course the student should be able to:
-select and/or produce photographic images for a specified communication context
-be able to citically assess fellow students work
-analyse photographic images from different perspectives and in different contexts

After the course the student should be able to:
-reflect on the responsibilities of a visual communicator
-identify possibilities to contribute to sustainable development
-understand the power of images in communicating values and shaping behaviour


-Presentation of assignments and portfolio
-Create a personal project within Visual
-Written reflection on a personal project Communication; graphic design or photography

Course content

The course is divided in three parts:

I. Visual Communication, 5 credits
II. History of Photography, 5 credits
III. Graphic Design, 5 credits

Learning activities

Lectures, practical assignments, portfolio, written reflection, oral presentations.
Each lecture is followed by practical assignments. The separate assignments add up to a personal project that at the end of the course will be presented in a portfolio accompanied by a written reflection.

Grading system

Excellent (A), Very Good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Pass (E) or Fail (U).
