A bachelor’s degree with a major in social- or behaviour sciences or medicine and English 6.

Specialisation and progression relative to the degree regulations

The course is given in the second term of the Master’s Program in Criminology and is a course within the main field of study that may be counted toward the Master’s Degree in Criminology. The course is also offered as an independent course.


The aim of the course is for the student to further develop the knowledge and skill necessary to conduct univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical analyzes, to interpret the results, and to be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods.


The course begins with a introduction to on univariate analysis. The course then moves on with a lecture on bivariate analysis. The main themes of the course are linear and logistic regression analysis, but other multivariate methods such as factor analysis, and variance analysis and discriminant analysis will also be presented.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to
1. conduct univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical analyzes using SPSS,
2. interpret the results of the analyzes,
3. assess the results of published statistical analyzes, and
4. present statistical analyzes in a scientifically written report.

Learning activities

The teaching takes the form of lectures, computer laboratories, and an individual assignment (addressing learning outcomes 1-4). The lectures will discuss a variety of statistical analytical methods’ foundations as well as their favours and flaws. The computer laboratories will provide the student with opportunities to work through assignments on available data material. The student will conduct and interpret the analysis in the assignments. The lecturer will show how to approach the assignments on a projection screen.


An individual written paper constitutes the basis for the examination in the course (addressing learning outcomes 1-4). In the report the student will conduct multivariate statistical analyzes on a data material. The main focus of the assessment is on the student’s ability to conduct statistical analyzes in SPSS and the student’s ability to interpret the results.
To receive a Passing Grade (C, D or E) it is required that the student complete the individually written paper and is able to conduct and interpret the statistical methods assessed. Achievement of the Grade of Distinction (A or B) requires that the individually written report is characterized of deeper understanding of the statistical methods used.

Right to re-take
Students who fail the exam are given the opportunity to do two re-takes with the same course content and with the same requirements. The student also has the right to take the examination in the same course in the subsequent course according to the same rule. Examination and re-takes are carried out at the times specified in the course schedule.

Grading system

Excellent (A), Very Good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Pass (E) or Fail (U).

Course evaluation

The course coordinator is responsible for conducting a summative evaluation in connection with the course's completion. The course coordinator provides the feedback to the students at the beginning of the next course. Notes from the feedback are made available to the course's students, and feedback is given to the students who will start the course in the next course session.

Interim rules

If a course is no longer offered or has undergone major changes, students are offered two re-take sessions based on the syllabus in force at registration during a period of one year from the date of the implementation of the changes
