Entry requirements

Degree of Bachelor in education, social sciences or the humanities, and the equivalent of Swedish secondary school English 6 or English B.
alternatively
A professional qualification specialising in teaching that comprises 180 credits, of which 15 credits from an independent project, and the equivalent of Swedish secondary school English 6 or English B.

Organisation

The programme comprises 120 credits at second-cycle level. It contains 97.5 credits from compulsory courses and 22.5 credits from elective courses. An independent project within the main field of education worth 30 credits is included. The programme is conducted in English and involves full-time studies. The third semester is the recommended period for international exchange studies.
The programme leads to a Degree of Master within the main field of Education. The programme has close links with the research community and an interdisciplinary and international profile. This provides suitable conditions for future studies at third-cycle level.
The programme studies education as both a theoretical and practical tradition. Great emphasis is placed on the student developing both a theoretical framework for understanding, and a repertoire of analytic tools suitable for work within the field of education. There is progression as the student deepens their knowledge of educational theory, and develops their ability to participate in scholarly discussions concerning education. As the programme is conducted in English, the student will successively strengthen their ability to communicate in an international context.
The programme draws on insights from different disciplines and it contains a wide range of theoretical perspectives informed by the philosophy of education, sociological studies of education, critical studies of education and didactics. Both European and Anglo-American perspectives on education will be studied.
The programme is also connected to the professional education and training offered by Malmö University, as well as the Faculty‚Äôs courses and programmes in education at third-cycle level.

Learning outcomes

Second-cycle courses and study programmes shall involve the acquisition of specialist knowledge, competence and skills in relation to first-cycle courses and study programmes, and in addition to the requirements for first-cycle courses and study programmes shall,
- further develop the ability of students to integrate and make autonomous use of their knowledge,
- develop the students' ability to deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations, an
- develop the students' potential for professional activities that demand considerable autonomy, or for research and development work.

Knowledge and understanding
For a Degree of Master the student shall
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including both an overview of the field and specialised knowledge in certain areas of the field as well as insight into current research and development work, and
- demonstrate specialised methodological knowledge in the main field of study.
Competence and skills
For a Degree of Master the student shall
- demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information,
- demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues critically, autonomously and creatively as well as to plan and, using appropriate methods, undertake advanced tasks within predetermined time frames and so contribute to the formation of knowledge as well as the ability to evaluate this work,
- demonstrate the ability in speech and writing both nationally and internationally to clearly report and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based in dialogue with different audiences, and
- demonstrate the skills required for participation in research and development work or autonomous employment in some other qualified capacity.

Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Master the student shall
- demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues and also to demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work
- demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing learning.

Independent project (degree project)
A requirement for the award of a Degree of Master (120 credits) is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 30 credits in the main field of study. The degree project may comprise less than 30 credits, however no less than 15 credits, if the student has already completed an independent project in the second cycle for at least 15 credits in the main field of study or the equivalent from a programme of study outside Sweden.

Upon completion of the programme, the requirements for the Degree of Master (120 credits) will be fulfilled.
Malmö University will issue a degree certificate upon application. The degree certificate will state the titles
Masterexamen med huvudområde pedagogik med inriktning mot utbildningsteori.
Degree of Master of Arts (120 credits) with a Major in Education with a Specialization in Educational Theory

Other Information

Teaching is conducted in English.
To be eligible to progress to the fourth semester, all courses (60 credits) from semesters one and two must have been successfully completed.
